Prescriptives The Illuminators

Prescriptives new collection, The Illuminators, is a collection of richly textured shades with threading of darkened gold. The look is "quiet opulence"- eyes are done in dark shades of antiqued, tarnished, burnished or matte gold. Cheeks are natural with an incandescent golden glow. Lips are enhanced with a glossy high lacquer finish.

-The Illuminator All Over Face Color (limited-edition, $35)- Three base shades overlaid with gold imparts a radiant multi-dimensional effect that's flattering to all skin tones. This sheer, pretty powder highlights and contours with golden shades of bronze and pink. Neat packaging too- the little silver charm adds character to the shiny granite packaging.

-Shine Envy (limited-edition, $18.50)- Lip lacquer with the opaque color of lipstick and the high-shine finish of a lip gloss. Provides medium to full coverage. I tried Nuance,
(mauve brown) other new shades include Barely, Champagne, and Blushing. It does provide a very opaque gloss that's very long lasting and creamy.

-Colorscope Lipcolor ($17.50)- Color and shine drench lips in new, Iced Plum (intense grape flecked with silver shimmer.) This color looks dark in the tube, but when applied, it comes out as a pretty raspberry color- it's kind of like Clinique's famous Black Honey, it's that amazing. Add a couple coats for a deeper shade, that will look different on everyone. The shimmer is pretty and festive for the holidays.

-Colorscope Eye Color ($14)- Soft, long wear eye shadow. The new, limited-edition shades are Goldleaf, Caviar and Storm. I used Goldleaf (golden khaki shimmer) and Caviar(black with gold shimmer). The color went on smoothly and blended easily. Goldleaf is a great shimmery base color for night and the gold flecks in Caviar make eyes pop.

-Colorscope Creamy Eye Color ($18)- A long wearing cream eye shadow that claims to stay color-true without creasing for up to 8 hours. Water-resistant. I used Smoking Gun (metallic gunmetal). It was creamy and easy to blend. Looks good under Caviar shadow.

Laura Mercier Diamond Duster

Does this not look like it belongs in the hands of Cher from Clueless?

Sure. But it's not a pen. It's the Laura Mercier Diamond Duster ($22).

I don't know about you, but I'm absolutely dying to set this amazing brush on my dresser top, but I just KNOW my cats would find it way too fascinating. I'd leave for work in the morning, and my kittens would be gazing up at the glittery, spherical plume of Marabou feathers, and when I got home, there would be strange clumps of white fur scattered about.

Vincent Longo Lip & Cheek Gel Stain

I was a Vincent Longo virgin until quite recently. I did some swapping on Makeup Alley and managed to finagle 2 brand new Lip and Cheek Gel Stains. I tried Liquid Kiss (red) and Baby Boo (plum) $22.50. They are transparent, water-based gel stain for a sheer wash of vibrant color. I have yet to use it on my cheeks, but I did use it on my lips. The first time, I applied it with the sponge applicator, all over my lips. It was a little dry, but it fully colored them and stayed on. The second time I used it, I went for a more natural look. I applied balm over my lips (non-shiny, Burt's Bees original to be exact) and then I used my finger to dab the stain into the center of my lips. It created a beautiful "I just ate a red popsicle" shade. This one will stay in our purse makeup-bag, which is quite an honor, to tell you the truth.

If you had to pick one... Which would it be?

Zhen Beauty

I remember being 12 years old and reading in Seventeen that there was a makeup brand designed specifically for Asian people, by Asian people, called Zhen Beauty, and immediately running to the phone to order the catalog. (Yes, we ordered catalogs by phone back then, haha.) Well, I never got around to actually ordering anything until now. It turns out to be high quality, reasonably priced makeup based on the basic colors that enhance Asian women's beauty.

-The Foundation Stick w/ SPF 8 ($20) is really good quality for the price. This foundation, created for Asian women with yellow undertones, comes in 5 colors. I tried Almond and was delighted to find that it matched my "tanned" complexion (usually the darkest I get all year.)
I sweep the somewhat drier than most foundation stick over my T-Zone and base of nose, then rub in with my fingers. Set with powder and it lasts nearly all through my work day. And that's 8 and 1/2 hours, sigh.

-The Zodiac Shadows ($10) were another fast favorite. These triple-pigmented, triple-milled shadows come in neutral and brown colors and provide long lasting color. I tried Taupe (chocolate milk, matte) and Tornado (deep brown, matte).

-With red lipstick being the big "in" thing, I tested the Matte Lipstick ($12) in Vino. It's a thick and creamy blue-red that I applied without anything else on my lips. The consistency was a bit dry, but it stayed on and didn't bleed or feather at all.

My verdict is, Zhen is everything I hoped for. If you're at all interested in trying it, I urge you to go do so immediately. For the cost of the products, I was pleasantly surprised and equally impressed.

Gloves In a Bottle

Gloves in a Bottle ($13) is a shielding lotion (similar to Skin MD (my ultimate fave) check it out in a previous post) that "keeps the BAD stuff out and the GOOD stuff in." The scent-less lotion provides a moisture barrier between your skin and outside irritants. Re-apply every 4 hours. I'm always washing my hands at work (I could be a bit of a germ-a-phobe) so I think I'll keep my bottle in my desk.
