Review: Nivea - A Kiss of Moisture/ Friday Fix

I was recently in Rite-Aid when I spotted a tub of these new Nivea Lip Balms. At $2.50 a pop I figured I couldn't go too wrong. I picked up the Kiss of Moisture Hydrating Lip Care SPF 4. The advanced formula contains moisturizing Shea Butter and Jojoba Oil for moisturization and the SPF 4 protects your lips from the sun. I first of all want to say I love the tube. It's perfection. The actual balm is white and doesn't really smell like anything at all. I like to really pack it on, doing 3-4 coats because one coat wears of quite easily. All in all, it's a bit thin for my taste, but I like it for everyday wear. It absorbs quickly, leaving lips soft and supple.
I can't wait to try the rest of the collection! Face Candy Grade: A-

Wedding Details: Pashminas

As some of you may know, I am getting married this September 13, 2008. My bridesmaids are wearing royal blue, strapless tea-length dresses that have a beautiful lace overlay. To punch up the color, I decided to use aquamarine. But where? On the shoulders.

Enter The Pashmina Store. This awesome website is where I found exactly what I wanted to give my girls. I chose the Pashmina/Silk Wrap in Aquamarine.

"There is nothing as smooth as silk, and The Pashmina Store is proud to bring you the finest quality Aquamarine pashmina wraps made with 70% top-quality pashmina wool and 30% luxurious silk. The touch of silk gives the pashmina an exceptional feel and an wonderful sheen. This beautiful green wrap is 28" x 80", plus 3" tassels on both ends. It is traditionally crafted by hand to give you a fabulous fashionable accessory.
Pashmina is the traditional name for the very finest grade of cashmere wool. Because of its unique softness and comforting warmth, pashmina is also known as the "diamond fabric" and the "soft gold of high Asia." Put simply, it is the finest, softest and warmest wool available anywhere."

They are super soft and comfy. I love them for all occasions. I even keep one in my car in case I get chilly. They are a great gift for yourself or a friend. I know that it was a little dangerous using bright blue for the dresses, because it can bring out the blue in under-eye circles, but the aquamarine will brighten the face. Plus, you've got to love the price. List price is $129.99 and their price is $49.99.

So here's the best part, a special for Face Candy readers, with your order get 10% off by using discount code CANDY. Offer valid until 9/30.

New Collection/ Review: Bobbi Brown Metallic Eye and Lip Color

NEW Metallic Eye Shadow ($20)- This high-shimmer, high-pigment formula applies smoothly and evenly and stays crease free for long-lasting wear. Available in a broad range of pastel to bold shades. I love these! They are awesome. I tried Brown Stone, Lavender and Mint. I was afraid Lavender would be too pastel for me, but it ended up applying like a sheer wash of metallic color. I dare say it could work on just about anyone, it's that versatile. I personally wasn't a fan of the Mint, while it looks lovely in the pan, it's just not the color for me. My favorite of the bunch was Brown Stone. It's a muted metallic brown that adds a touch of color, but not too much. Great for a sheer wash. Lasts long, especially when used with an eyeshadow primer.

Available in:
-Brown Stone*
-Burnt Sugar
-Champagne Quartz
-Cognac
-Forest
-Gold Dust
-Golden Peach
-Iced Blue
-Java
-Lavender*
-Midnight
-Mint
-Navajo
-Penny
-Pink Pearl
-Rockstar
-Sage
-Velvet Plum

NEW Metallic Lip Color
($22) High-Shine Metallics. Discover this NEW lipstick formulated with a high-shine emollients and light-reflective pearls to create a shimmery look that's rich and multi-dimensional. Lipstick has a soft and creamy feel with medium coverage. I was pretty excited for these. I LOVE Bobbi's Lipsticks. They are the ultimate in Lipstick for me. I love the colors, the soft, lightweight texture and the fact that they don't smell or taste like anything. These new ones provide a sheer layer of metallic shine and color. I used Pretty Pink, a medium/light cotton candy pink. I was a little disappointed in the color payoff, but was not disappointed with the shimmer and lasting power of it. I can't wait to try more shades!

Available in:
-Baby Peach
-Beige Gold
-Berry
-Brown
-Dusk
-Gilded Pink
-Kir
-Plum
-Pretty Pink*
-Raspberry
-Ruby
-Ruffle
-Silver Haze
-Twilight Pink

Review: Thermaclear

Thermaclear ($149.95)

Heat Enabled Acne Treatment
What it is:
A heat-enabled blemish clearing skincare tool for mild to moderate acne.

What it does:
The Thermaclear Heat Enabled Acne Treatment treats in seconds, clears in days. The easy to use handheld ThermaClear device delivers a safe, controlled burst of heat that neutralizes pimple-causing bacteria at the source. It's clinically proven to be safe and effective, clearing pimples up to 4 times faster than those not treated with ThermaClear. Simply apply to each pimple as you notice it forming. And the best part? Treatment time is only 2 seconds per pimple.

What else you need to know:
When considering if ThermaClear is right for you, keep in mind that mild acne is defined as several inflamed (red) pimples, while moderate acne is many inflamed pimples and pustules (elevation of skin that is filled with pus). Theraclear should not be used by those with severe nodular or cystic acne and it is not for use on blackheads and whiteheads. Clearer skin can be yours quickly and easily, but for safety and best results be sure to read and understand the booklet that comes with your ThermaClear device.

-Not for use on skin lesions such as moles, warts, or ingrown hairs, or on irritated skin or skin with open sores.
-Not for use on skin that is sensitive to heat, sun or chemicals, as the device utilizes a heated pulse to treat pimples.
-In case of adverse reaction, discontinue use and contact your doctor or dermatologist.
-Do not use when ThermaClear is wet.
-Do not use if tip of device is damaged or broken. Do not attempt to repair a broken device.
-Do not store near a heat source or in direct sunlight as these may damage the device.
-Not for use with rechargeable batteries. Only fresh, high-quality alkaline AA batteries should be used.
-Avoid contact with eyes.
-Keep out of reach of children.

I personally thought that this hurt and didn't get rid of zits. I don't recommend it. For whatever reason, these "devices" seem less effective than traditional zit creams, IMO. But, if you want to try it (possibly the most expensive zit treatment around) be my guest.

A Michael Phelps Tribute

Everywhere I turn, it's Michael Phelps-this, Michael Phelps-that. Even Lindsay Lohan thinks he's "f-g amazing"- and it's not surprising. I would personally like to take this time to say: 1. I wish I had your cornflake money 2. Way to go inspiring children to not be obese.

I went through elementary, middle and high school with this boy (though I was one year ahead of him) and who ever would have thought that gangly skinny kid would turn out to be a gold-medal winning machine? I remember back before he'd even won anything, we had that "michael phelps" parade at school and they re-named Cedar Avenue- "Michael Phelps Way" and everyone was so put off. (Whatever at least we got to miss class.) We thought it was so lame. But now, looking back, visions of the high school orchestra playing "you'll be in my heart"- michael phelps, it seems somewhat reasonable.

So here's to you, Michael Phelps, way to go being an Olympian, instead of a face-less douchebag actor.

New: Benefit - Powderflage

Benefit's Powderflage ($28) is a weightless, light-diffusing powder concealer for under the eyes and face. The silky light pink powder magically camouflages and diffuses. The specialized brush conceals in 2 quick strokes.

What do you think of this? I don't think pink would work for me. Perhaps if they had a yellow one? I don't know. I'm not into it.

Beauty Trend: Facial Oil

I'm beginning to like the idea of face oils. I really want to try one. I'm torn between Josie Maran's Aragan Oil and this new Jurlique one.

Jurlique Skin Balancing Face Oil ($50, available September 15, 2008)

What's in it:
- Unique blend of biodynamic and organic ingredients helps balance, nurture and protect skin.
- Biodynamic blend is enriched with Chamomile, Calendula, Marshmallow and Rose extracts.
- Avocado, Macadamia, Rose Hip and Safflower oils protect against moisture loss and improves elasticity.
- Does not contain parabens, mineral oils, propylene glycol, sodium lauryl sulphate, synthetic emulsifiers, or artificial colours and fragrances.
- Said to be a favorite among skin care professionals for its versatility and suitability across all skin types, even oily, as the product adapts to the skin’s natural oil production cycle, while maintaining moisture levels.

Josie Maran Argan Oil ($48)
What it is:
A lightweight oil that can be used as a daily moisturizer and skin treatment.

What it does:
Josie Maran Argan Oil is a legendary oil that's rich in vitamin E and essential fatty acids, and grown organically in Morocco. Argan oil is known to have many treatment benefits, including hydrating and nourishing skin, as well as toning and firming. It's gentle enough to use on all skin types and is believed to help with skin conditions including acne.

What else you need to know:
The oil is housed in a recyclable glass bottle, and purchased from women's cooperatives in Morocco to support their social and economic welfare. These cooperatives work within a UNESCO biosphere reserve that ensures the protection and reforestation of Argan trees.

Have you tried either one of these? Have your own recommendation? Leave it in the comments section.

Dior Impression Cuir

I'm extremely tempted by this Dior Impression Cuir Leather Couture For The Eyes ($55). It looks gorgeous, but I wonder how good it looks on. And how much the colors differ. I don't really want to pay $55 for one shadow. Have you tried it? Would you buy it just because it's pretty?

Review: Clean & Clear Soft Products

Clean & Clear Soft Purifying Cleanser (Scrub, $6.99)- A foaming face scrub that gently removes dirt, oil and impurities with smooth round exfoliating grains as it lathers. It contains natural fruit acids to exfoliate dead skin cells to prevent clogged pores and White tea, a powerful antioxidant known to protect against free radicals caused by the environment. I picked this up at the grocery store when we ran out of face soap. I like it for everyday use in the morning. I've all ready picked up another tube.

Clean & Clear Soft In Shower Facial (Steam, $6.99)- Very similar to Prescriptives Instant Gratification, you wet your face in the shower, spread it onto skin (don't rub yet) and let it sit for one minute. The steam from the water allows the ingredients to deep cleanse pores while infusing moisture. Glycolic Acid, clay, natural fruit acids and exfoliating beads slough away dull, tired skin in an instant. This stuff is awesome. I'm kind of tempted to go out and buy like 50 bottles in case they ever decide to stop making it. Use it and tell me you don't like it.

Clean & Clear Soft Day Moisturizer w/ SPF 15 ($8.49)- A lightweight, non-greasy moisturizer that protects your skin from the sun. I've been using this and like it a lot.

Clean & Clear Soft Night Moisturizer
($8.49)- A lightweight, oil-free moisturizer that contains glycolic acid, natural fruit acids, white tea and a specially formulated moisturizing complex that works through the night. One pump is all you need, it sinks in quickly, moisturizes well, isn't too thick and doesn't smell bad. Great bang for your buck.

Overall, I like all of these items, but if you had to choose just one- let it be Steam. It rocks my world. If blindfolded and forced to discern between Steam and Prescriptives Instant Gratification, I couldn't do it. (And if I could it would only be because of a slight difference in smell.)

Review: Tassi/ Keep Your Hair Outta There

Each day, women everywhere face a common problem as they wash their face, care for their skin and apply their makeup — how to keep their hair out of the way. Enter the Tassi.

What’s the Tassi ($14.99)? It’s a patented product that makes it easy for you to keep your hair away from your face. Made of a comfortable stretch terry cloth, the Tassi goes on in three easy steps and gently lifts and holds your hair. Unlike headbands, clips or turbans, the Tassi does not flatten, twist or mess up your “do,” so it’s perfect for protecting second-day blowouts, too. You’ll also love to use your Tassi while you’re washing your face, taking a bath, applying makeup or whenever you want your hair out of the way.

Fun and fashionable, the Tassi is available in 12 colors, including white, soft pink, hot pink, chocolate brown, lavender, powder blue, lime green, tan, tangerine, turquoise, chili pepper red and black.

Why Does Everyone Gotta Have a Tassi?

  • Keeps your hair outta your face
  • Simple, fast and easy to use for any hair length or style
  • Made of soft, stretch terry cloth with special elastic for comfort
  • One size fits most
  • Machine wash and dry and it’s ready to wear again!
I was a bit skeptical of the Tassi when I opened it up. It looks like a huge stretched out scrunchie. I used it the traditional way, by pulling it over my head and then letting the inner part keep my bangs out of my face while washing it. Why didn't someone think of this sooner? Fantastic. Gals with long hair will love it.

Review: nubar - the healthy alternative for beautiful nails

I had never heard of nubar- "the healthy alternative for beautiful nails" before. These polishes are non-toxic. They contain zero formaldehyde, toluene or (DBP) phthalate (all chemicals which have been linked to causing cancer.)

nubar Get Hot Tech Kit ($48.95, on sale now for $39.95)- 7 super bright polishes, perfect for summer. All of these colors are awesome, my favorites are the darker orange and the purple (it's a little bit warmer than Essie's Bermuda Shorts.) They're all great with a tan, they make your toes or fingers pop with color. The polishes are smooth and long-wearing.

nubar Bouquet Collection ($49.95, on sale now for $45)- A collection of 8 pink polishes, that symbolizes the giving of bouquets that represents a gift to someone special for any occasion. Deep pink= gratitude and respect, light pink= love and happiness. All of these are pretty, I'm considering wearing the light pink for my wedding.

I think I have a new favorite nail polish. These are great. I love all the colors, the fact they are toxin-free, they're highly pigmented- a lot of times one coat will do, and top with a clear top coat and the polish will stay on for about a week and a half. Singles are sold for $6.99. The website is pretty cool, check it out.

08-08-08: Make it your skin's lucky day with 8 Hour Cream

08.08.08 is a lucky date. When reading tarot cards, the number 8 represents ‘Strength’ or ‘Justice’. In numerology, it’s connected with leadership and when the figure is laid on its side, it’s the symbol for infinity. In China, 8 is considered one of the most fortuitous of all numbers, coveted for addresses, licence plates and bank numbers. The reason? When 8 is spoken, it sounds just like the word for ‘fortune’. In fact, the telephone number 8888-8888 was purchased
for over $270,000!

What better way to celebrate than with Elizabeth Arden's Eight Hour Cream.
An instant hit when it was created in 1930, it has stood the test of time, becoming a global bestseller. It’s the soothing, smoothing, skin-saving balm with serious star status. Winner of 22 international beauty awards and found in all the hottest ‘It’ bags… Supermodels know that’s it’s fab. It’s at the top of every beauty-editor’s hot list. It’s a Hollywood icon, a socialite secret. A cult favorite of celebrities. Including our very own Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Check out the 2 online exclusive 8 Hour Cream value sets here.

Review: Hair Play- Set

Hair Play- Set ($19.50)- A weightless detangling moisturizing foam-lotion that gives hair controlled silky body. De-frizz shine without flake. It's styling and hair care combined with the light scent of an ocean breeze. It provides flexible hold for all hair textures. The foam is awesome. I love it. It share the essential properties of both mousse and gel for healthy hair. I pump some into my hands and smooth it through my hair, holding my head upside down. It smells sweet and the smell lingers in a nice way. I used Medium Hold (which is supposedly for curly hair), but it's also available in Light Hold.

Review: Anastasia Beverly Hills

I recently had the pleasure of trying out some of the Anastasia Beverly Hills products. Left to right.

-Brow Filler ($20)- A spring loaded powder tipped sponge duo for eyebrows. The powder is designed to be slightly damp to adhere to the skin vs. brow hair allowing one to build color only where it is needed.

One end is blonde and one is brunette, the brunette is too dark for me (use a lighter shade to make your eyes pop) so I mix them together for the perfect shade. Quite handy and unique.
-Brow Wiz ($18)- The slimmest mechanical brow pencil (ever?) and spooley brush. Mimic brow hair by using the small dashes, then smooth over and blend with the brush.
Available in:
  • Ash Blonde
  • Brunette
  • Medium Ash
This pencil provides natural looking brows in only seconds.
-Brow Enhancing Serum ($35)- A colorless, odorless gel comprised of top proteins and vitamins designed to condition, repair and restore the eyebrows. This serum is clinically proven to stimulate the hair follicle in as quickly as 4-6 weeks.
I actually have seen results! It's crazy. Try it.
-Five Piece Brow Kit ($65)- Tweezers (great for tiny, stubborn hairs), Brow Powder (awesome! 2 colors to mix), 4 Brow Stencils (these did not work for me), one Duo Brush (Angled Cut/Spooley) and Brow Gel (a clear fortified gel to keep brows in place)
Available in:
  • -Ash Blonde
  • -Medium Ash
  • -Brunette

-Tinted Brow Gel ($19)- A combination of tinted cream and gel defines and fills in sparse brows while controlling and shaping without fading or flaking (yuck.) Available in:
  • -Caramel (warm golden light brown)
  • -Espresso (rich dark brown)
  • -Granite (grayish taupe)
I thought that Caramel would be too light for me, but it really gave me the most natural look. Sometimes when I sleep on my face, (I know I shouldn't, but I can't help it) when I wake up, my brows are going every which way. It's nuts. Sweep this over your brows and they'll stay in place all day, plus define them subtly. A quick fix if you are in a hurry.
-Perfect Brow Pencil ($22)- A velvety pencil on one end and a brow brush on the other. Available in:
  • -Ash Blonde (cool taupe)
  • -Blonde (warm gold)
  • -Strawburn (reddish blonde)
  • -Medium Ash (taupe based brown)
  • -Brunette (dark warm brown)
  • -Ultimate brown (warm golden brown)
-Go Brow- Universal Brow Pencil ($21)- A double-ended brow pencil and highlighter duo. This is awesome for your purse. In seconds, you can define your brows, flip it upside down and highlight your brow bone and inner corners of eyes. I love the smoothness of the brow pencil, it glides right on and the highlighter is really creamy.
All of the Anastasia products are fantastic. I would recommend them all. My biggest problem with them is that I go to do my brows and I want to use ALL of them! Restraining myself is the hardest part.
Brow Tips from Anastasia:

Key to Great Eyebrows

"Eyebrows must vary with each individual in shape, size, length, and color. A person's face shape, cheekbones, and nose all affect the outcome of their brow shape. What I always try to achieve is a very well groomed natural arch that will enhance all of your features and soften your look." - Anastasia Soare

How to Choose the Best Color For Your Brow
  • Blondes: Eyebrows should always be a little darker than your hair. Light Blondes approximately two shades darker.
  • Brunettes: If you are an intense brunette, eyebrows should be about two shades lighter. This takes the edge off and softens the look.
How to Choose an Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Powder color:
  • Light Blonde Hair use Golden Blonde Brow Powder
  • Medium to Dark Blonde Hair use Ash Blonde Brow Powder
  • Brunette and Deep Auburn Hair use Brunette Brow Powder
  • Strawberry Blonde use Strawburn or Golden Blonde

Face Candy Fashion

I have what some would call a "shopping problem." I can't help myself. I get paid, and I want to spend. BUT, growing up, I was always taught that you should never pay full price for anything.
My Mom should have a website, actually, because I don't know anyone who bargain shops like she does. While she likes to peruse the racks herself, I prefer to surf the web for my deals.

Here are some of my favorite fashion websites:

1. ShopItToMe.com- This is a free site that does all your shopping for you. Select your favorite apparel brands (mine include Diane Von Furstenburg, Juicy Couture, Tory Burch) then select your size. Decide whether you want daily, weekly or semi-weekly emails of which new items go on sale in your size. I was notified of this bright pink and orange Tory Burch bag that was originally $225, and I got it for $157.

2. ShopStyle.com- Type in what brand or style you're looking for, and get the listings of where you can buy it. Super easy to navigate and they have Shopstyleliving and shopstylekids too.
This is where I found my Michael Kors Santorini Chain Strap Purse, originally $198, for $99 at Overstock.com.

3. HauteLook.com- A platform for premium brands to reach customers directly. HauteLook club members have free access to the latest merchandise at discounts of up to 75% off of retail prices. Prior to each sale, an invitation stating the sale start and end date will be sent to your email. They sponsor many of your favorite well known and lesser known brands (lately including BCBG Max Azria, Katherine Kwei, Mystique and Taryn Rose). Sometimes they even do cosmetic sales (like Smashbox or Stila). My latest and greatest find was this BCBG Max Azria dress, regularly $198 for $99. I've been dying to get one of these, because they are so form-fittingly similar to the gorgeous (and insanely expensive) Herve Leger dresses.
