Revew: Liz Earle Skincare

-Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser Starter Kit 3.3 fl. oz. Pump + 2 Muslin Cloths ($24.50)- An award winning, concentrated cream that quickly removes grime and makeup. The pure muslin cloths dislodges dead skin cells. I tried this, but it kind of seems like an extra hassle to be using an extra cloth. Results are normal, but I would like it more if there wasn't that extra step.

Face Candy Grade: C

-Instant Boost Skin Tonic 6.7 fl. oz.
($21)- A non-drying floral tonic that contains Vitamin E, organic aloe vera, calendula, cucumber and rose-scented geranium. This is a soothing water-like tonic that revitalizes skin on contact. My only complaint would be the packaging. The twist cap causes more product to come out than necessary. I usually end up spilling it all over the place trying to get it on the cotton ball. I noticed on the website though, that it comes in a spray bottle.

Face Candy Grade: B-

-Superskin Concentrate 1 fl. oz. ($70)- An aromatic blend of 100% pure plant oils. Contains aragon and rosehip oils, neroli, lavender, chamomile essential oils and Vitamin E. I LOVE this stuff. After cleansing and toning and then applying serum I pump 1-2 drops of this oil into my hands, warm it up and then massage into my face and neck. It's perfect for winter when your skin gets super dry. If I feel like I need more moisture, I use the Superskin Moisturizer on top.

Face Candy Grade: A+

-Superskin Moisturizer 1.6 fl. oz.
($60)- A rich, fragrance-free moisturizer that contains Borag Oil, Glycerin, Pomegranate Extract, Rose Hip Oil, Shea Butter and Vitamin E. I've been using this at nighttime and I love it because it doesn't make your skin feel too oily. Only a dab will do. My only problem is that it doesn't smell very good. My husband likened it to Desitin.

Review: Calvin Klein - Delicious Fusion Moisturizing Lip Color

When I spotted CK's Delicious Fusion Moisturizing Lip Color ($18) on Sephora's website, and all the pretty colors it came in, I knew I needed to have it. It's not your regular old lipstick either, it's got a vitamin-enriched core in the middle that soothes, moisturizes and protects lips. As this was my first CK makeup product to try, I was pretty excited. I tried 305 Love Vapor (bright bubblegum pink.) The tube it comes in is small but it packs a lot of punch. The color is perfect, it's my lips but better. I was a little disappointed in the staying quality of the light and creamy lipstick, so I applied, blotted, tissued and applied again, and it stayed on for 3 hours, throughout dinner. I want ALL of the gorgeous shades now.

Review: Givenchy - Lovely Prism Eau de Toilette

Lovely Prism ($55) is a light, fresh fragrance with notes of green apple, cassis, clementine, peony, magnolia, apple blossom, hawthorne, sandalwood and iris. I really like the scent, but the only problem is that it wears off VERY quickly. I like to be able to smell myself throughout the day. Maybe it's because it's an eau de toilette. The only reason it's not one of my favorites is because of the lack of longevity. How could you not like a pink fragrance?

Face Candy Grade: B-

If you're like me, you don't want to pay retail for... well, anything. Head over to Perfume Center.com. Regularly $55, you only pay $39.95. You save $15.05. Sweet! There's tons of brands, so check it out before you pay full price!

Review: Clarisonic Skincare Brush

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of testing out the Clarisonic Skincare Brush ($195.) I got the pink Breast Cancer Awareness one, cuz what can I say? I don't usually have pink things so it's nice to have this be pink. OH MY Gosh, as I seriously, this second, JUST found out that this is made by the people who make the Sonicare Toothbrush!

(PERSONAL RAMBLING coming... Skip ahead if you'd prefer.)

I used to be pretty into dental hygine and I had one of those toothbrushes like 5 years ago and it was awesome, I LOVED it and then one day it just stopped working and nothing could fix it. And then I got in the habit of using a regular t-b, and now I'm remembering how awesome the old one was and want one. Now. But they're expensive. And I don't have any spare $. (Mainly cuz I spend every cent on new makeup or clothes, or shoes or purses, cuz those are like investments, right?) Haha, not very good investments apparently, cuz I've got lots of pretty designer stuff, and what else? I've paid $20,000 to live in my apartment, which makes me literally ill to think of. I think it's time I start saving my $ for a house. AND I have noticed that all I do lately is buy, buy, buy. Let's address that for a minute. I mostly blame this obsessive online shopping on things like "Shop it to me"- the newsletter that sends you the day's sales based on the designers and sizes you choose, Hautelook.com, Ideeli.com, Giltgroupe.com. It's so messed up. I have to stop. Cold turkey with that stuff and the makeup. Which scares me , because what if there's some super awesome limited edition CHANEL eye shadow quad that I MUST have, and can't? AHH it's so hard! I apologize for the rambling. Back to the review.
The Clarisonic Skincare Brush is NOT recession-friendly. $195? Are you kidding? But, coming from this brand, I'm not so surprised it was so pricey. Those t-b's ain't cheap. It seems to be an unnecessary splurge. But if you're really obsessed with your skin, you should certainly look into this. The soft brush head moves back and forth at more than 300x per second. That loosens dirt, makeup and oil. It's proven to remove more dirt than traditional superficial cleansing, which prepares your skin to absorb serums and moisturizers better. It claims to "reduce dry skin patches, oily areas and blemishes and get skin 2x cleaner. Pore size, fine lines and wrinkles appear smaller." It's good for all skin types and gentle enough to use for cleansing rosacea and sebborheic dermatitis. I have to say I was definitely skeptical but intrigued. If you look on Sephora.com there's lots of raves and a couple rants.

First you have to charge the thing for 24 hours, which kind of reduced my excitement to try it. Sometime the next day, you wet your face and the brush head, apply cleanser and then rub in a circular motion. Beeps will tell you when to move to another part of your face. The first 20 seconds are spent on your forehead, 20 seconds on your nose/chin region and 10 seconds for each cheek. Then it automatically turns off. Rinse the brush head and you're done. Replace the brush head ($25) every 3 months and charge every 30 minutes.

I keep mine in the shower since it's waterproof. For only 50 seconds every morning and night, it does get your face VERY clean and smooth. After only the 2nd day my husband asked me if I was doing something different. Overall I do really like it. At first my skin broke out, but that's just because it's working. I continued use and it got better. Revitalized. I think I will continue to use it and buy $25 brush heads. Here's another option, if you're tight on cash and want the same type of results...

Go to Sally's Beauty Supply and buying this Bath Secrets Facial Cleansing Brush for $1.99 and move it in really fast circles on your face. Everyone that reviewed it on the website gave it 5/5 stars. One lady even likes to use one for cleaning off mushrooms.

Don't Forget: MAC Win It!

WIN IT!!!

SO, I have 1 Studio Sculpt SPF 15 Foundation in NC15 and 1 Studio Sculpt Concealer in NC 45. If you are either of those colors, please leave a comment and which one would match you. Two random winners will be picked on Tuesday, March 31, 2009.

Makeup Storage - Everyday Items

My brother-in-law left this silverware organizer in our kitchen after he moved out of the apartment that my husband and I now live in. It was dirty so I cleaned it up with some 409 and decided to use it for my makeup. It's pretty big but I need a lot of room so it works. I separated it into different compartments. Eyes, Cheeks and Face.

Sneek Peek: Giorgio Armani - Sienna Minerals Bronzing Palette

The Giorgio Armani - Sienna Minerals Bronzing Palette ($65)- A unique tapestry of sun-splashed mineral colors that mix together to create an all-over blush that bronzes and sculpts the face for a golden bronze/deep reddish-brown glow. Hm.. This is the first GA product that has really got me interested... I'd have to see the way it swatches first before plunking down $65 buckaroonies. What do you think?

Make Up Storage: Kyle's Lippie Collection

One of my favorite questions ever, besides "what's in your bag" is "how do you store your make up? For a long time I'd been using those tupperware-like storage boxes, but I decided to upgrade when I saw these bright red lacquered boxes on sale at Crate & Barrel. I use a medium sized box for my lippies. I use the tops of gift boxes to fill with lippies and then stack them on top of each other. Here's part one of my lippies. I forgot the other box.

(Counterclockwise)
Layer 1: MAC Lip Palettes, Stila Lip Glazes, Vincent Longo Lip Stains, Clinique Palette, Soft Lips/ Kiss My Face Stick Glosses, Clinique PINK Bamboo Lipsticks, MAC Pro Longwear Lustre Lipcolours, Lancome Color Fever Lipsticks, Mini Lancome Juicy Tube, Mini Bobbi Brown Lipstick.

Layer 2: Bobbi Brown Creamy Lipsticks, Bobbi Brown Lipsticks, MAC Mattenes, MAC Slimshines, Tarte 24/7 Lip Color, Bobbi Brown Tinted Lip Balm, Lancome Lipstick.

Layer 3: Tarte Mini Glosses, Cargo Plant Love Botanical Lipstick, Shu Uemura Rouge Unlimited Lipsticks, YSL Rouge Volupte Lipstick, Vincent Longo Perfect Shine Lip Glosses, Vincent Longo Diamond Lipgloss, Christian Dior Creme de Gloss, Estee Lauder Lip Pencil, MAC Lip Pencils, NARS Lip Pencil, Cover Girl Lip Stain, Wei East Mini Lip Gloss.

I keep the more expensive stuff in the boxes for some reason. In the other two non-lacquered boxes, one of which is a tupperware container and the other a gift box, I keep my MAC Lipsticks and some other random ones I have in my "rotation." I keep my lipglosses upside down so that I can see the color better when I'm searching for a specific color. How do you store your make up? Tell me in the comments.

There's more to come...

UH OH: Favorite Product Discontinued?

The first place to go to track down a much-missed favorite is the manufacturer:

Call the makeup brand’s customer-service department to ask about leftover inventory, upgraded formulas/names or comparable substitutes.

* Estée Lauder brands: You can find products discontinued in the last 24 months through the company’s Gone but Not Forgotten program; you can buy up to six pieces, depending on availability. Call 800-216-7173 to start your search.
* Almay, Revlon & Ultima II: You can find discontinued products at cosmeticsandmore..com and their affiliated retail outlets (in Arizona, New York, New Jersey, and North Carolina), or call 888-882-5629 to place an order.
* Lancôme, Molton Brown and Nars: These companies sell discontinued items on their sites—Lancome-usa.com, Moltonbrown.com, and Narscosmetics.com—until inventory runs dry. Some brand sites, including Benefitcosmetics.com, Clinique.com, Lancome-usa.com, and Prescriptives.com—feature online alerts, so customers have fair warning when discontinued goods are disappearing.

If the manufacturer is unable to track down an old fave, here are some other sites worth checking out:

* Discount.makeup.com: This subsidiary of Makeup.com sells discontinued beauty products from many brands, including Shiseido and Bare Escentuals.
* Beautyencounter.com: This site sells hard-to-find products from Max Factor, Neutrogena, Goldwell, Sebastian, KMS, and more.
* Vermontcountrystore.com: Its niche is hard-to-find items, and customer service will track down products for which they get a lot of requests, even if the site doesn’t carry them. When an item is no longer manufactured and demand is sufficient, the site buys an original formula and reproduces.
* Threecustom.com: The go-to place for celebrity makeup artists, Three Custom Color specialists can replicate the exact shade and texture of just about any color cosmetic product, including blush, eyeshadow, lipstick, concealer, and foundation. The company has an archive of 9,000 makeup shades dating back to the 1930s, and it will duplicate a hue if you send a dime-size sample.

Still no luck? Here are other places to do makeup research:

* Ebay.com, Amazon.com and Overstock.com: These sites can list discontinued products. Since the goods offered can come from third parties, there’s the risk that a product is old or wasn’t stored or shipped properly, so read the fine print carefully regarding any return policy before ordering.
* Makeupalley.com: You can find in-depth information on tons of products, including discontinued ones, at this social community of beauty-product consumers. You can post a product request on the Swap Board; if another member owns the item, you can negotiate a trade.
* The Fragrance Foundation: For detailed information on just about any fragrance that’s ever existed, go to fragrancefoundation.org and click on Fragrance Directory.

Review: Maybelline Lash Stiletto

As a Korean gal with short, downward turned eyelashes, I'm always excited to try a new mascara. Maybelline's new Lash Stiletto Mascara ($7.50) intrigued me. First of all, the packaging, designed to look like the heel of a stiletto is a really cute idea. I applied two coats. It gave me noticeably longer, wispy lashes. Not super volumized, but certainly more defined. My favorite mascara technique is to use a lengthening mascara (like this one) and then layer a volumizing one on top (try L'Oreal Voluminous Mascara.) For $7.50 I think it's definitely worth it, and a good drugstore buy. It's washable with soap and water, but I personally would prefer a waterproof version. Available in Very Black, Soft Black and Brownish Black.

Salma Hayek to Launch Cosmetic Line

Salma Hayek is set to create an anti-aging cosmetic line, inspired by her cosmetologist grandmother, Maria Luisa, who had glowing skin into her 90's. The collection is unnamed as of yet, but it will be named honoring her grandmother. Hayek told Instyle Magazine:

Review: Jouer Cosmetics

Recently I've been kind of obsessed with Jouer Cosmetics. I love the way the packaging is interlockable. You can snap together the chocolate brown plastic packaging into whatever combination of eyeshadow or blush you want. And one of the coolest things about the website, is that it shows you what every eye shadow, blush, lipstick, etc. looks like on someone with your skin tone. Check it out. I spent waaay too long there.

Age-Repairing Perfctor ($34)- A mineral age-repairing perfector containing Dermaxyl Complex, Vitamin E, Amica Oil and Japanese Tea Extract. Conceals without being heavy. This is one of the lightest feeling foundations I've ever tried. No. 4 (light to medium complexions with golden undertones) is perfect for me in the winter, I'll have to get No. 5 for summer.

Face Candy Grade: A+ Highly Recommended

Age-Repairing Brightener ($32)- A rich, emollient brightener that moisturizes and reduces the appearnce of dark circles and fine lines. Contains Dermaxyl Complex, Orchid Complex, Camellia Oil and Vitamins A, B & E. Warm was too dark for me. Next time I'll have to try Medium.

Face Candy Grade: ? Still unknown. Not enough data for a definitive response.

Powder Eyeshadow ($20)- Oil-free, satin shimmer and matte shadows with light-diffusing mineral pigments. I used Espresso- Shimmering Smoky Slate and Bourdeaux- Shimmering Deep Aubergine. These shadows are smooth and blend like a dream. They're tiny and I love that you can clip them together. Both colors are pretty, I use Espresso to line and define and the Bordeaux is the perfect color. It's slightly plum and shimmering.

Face Candy Grade: A+

Moisturizing Lip Gloss ($20)- Sheer gloss loaded with Vitamins A, C & E, Shea Butter, Jojoba Oil and Pomegranate Seed Oil to soothe, nourish, rejuvenate and protect. connects to any Jouer custom palette. I tried Pink Sand, a shimmering bronzed pink. I love the nude look it provides, very natural and non-sticky.

Face Candy Grade: A

Eye Definer ($20)- A velvety eyeliner rich in jojoba oil, shea butter and vitamins A & E. I tried Chocolat- Shimmering Brown. I LOVE the way this glides along my lower lashes. It looks awesome.

Face Candy Grade: A

Hydrating Lipstick ($22)- Provides a smooth, soft finish with the moisturizing properties of Brazil's Cupuacu Butter. I tried Simone, a true red. Smooth and creamy, one of my favorite reds.

Face Candy Grade: B

Mineral Powder Blush ($24)- Lightweight, oil-free mineral powder brush that contains Japanese Green Tea Powder, Vitamins A, C & E and light diffusing minerals. I used Rose- Rose Pink. The color is buildable and natural looking. I keep it in my purse.

Face Candy Grade: B

Overall, this sampling from the brand has thoroughly impressed me. Not only are the formula's great, but the packaging wins me over for sure. When I leave it out on the coffee table, someone always picks it up and says it's cool. I love that you can make your own palettes and change them whenever you want. I definitely encourage anyone who hasn't tried it to do so! You won't regret it.

Jane Iredale

Jane Iredale's Moonglow Bronzer ($46) A sandy beige, a bronzy orange, a pale pink and a cool brown. It's made with 24-Karat gold flakes for a golden glow. Swirl them all together or use them separately on cheeks and eyes. I personally love to do my eyes with it and then a light dusting on my cheeks. Now I know that $46 is a lot to pay for "one" thing, but keep in mind that it is a multi-tasker. If you can't afford a shimmer brick, this will do the same sort of thing.

Brush More for Less Dandruff: Goody - Reduce Dandruff Cushion Brush

I recently have had an embarrassing problem... Dandruff. At first I just thought that my hair styling cream was flaking and causing the nasty little flakes, but then I thought about it for a bit. I've had short hair for about 5 years. At that point I packed by hair brush into a box and left it in the basement. I seriously have not brushed my hair for 5 whole years. I've taken a comb to it every now and then, just not a brush. After confessing this to a Goody PR rep, she sent me this. The Goody Styling Therapy Reduce Dandruff Cushion Brush ($13.) It has copper bristles to kill 88% of bacteria and fungi that causes dandruff and it is said to stop itching, flaking and static. I recently read about a study that showed how aluminium, stainless steel and plastic surfaces harbor bacteria until it is manually cleaned. Copper, however, is antibacterial.

My husband and I have both been using this brush for a couple weeks now. I've made it a habit to massage my whole scalp with it before I jump in the shower. This eliminates excessive hair-loss IN the shower. So far, so good. The dandruff is gone!

Wei East - WE Help Bring The Hope Collection

The Wei East We Bring the Hope Collection ($70) donates 100% of its sales to the Autism Treatment Center of America and Autism Speaks. My dad was a dedicated teacher of autistic teenagers. Lots of us know someone who is affected by autism.

This collection includes:
-China Herbal Foaming Cleanser 6oz
-China Herbal Youth Recaptured Serum 1 fl oz
-China Herbal Eyes Alive 0.7oz
-China Herbal Ultimate Renewal 1.5oz
-White Lotus Defining Moment Finishing and Correcting Serum 0.5 fl oz
-White Olive Tinted Lip Smoother 0.28oz
-China Herbal Hand & Body Perfection 3.5oz
-China Clay Purifying Masque 3.5oz

I visited the Wei East website, and it's huge. There's a lot of different categories, so I definitely recomend checking it out yourself. One of my favorites in this collection is the China Herbal Foaming Cleanser. It's soap-free and oil-free, based on a personal formula of Ming Dynasty Princess Zhoujun, a lady known for her glowing complexion. I also like the China Herbal Hand & Body Perfection. It's a lightly scented lotion that saved my crocodile skin this winter.

Face Candy Favorite: Aquaphor Healing Ointment

Today, in particular, I'm soooo happy that I have my tiny (.35 oz) tube of Aquaphor Healing Ointment in my purse. It was snowing sideways when I was on my way to work. I've been having some problems with red, chapped, flakiness around my nose and lips. For times when my Nivea Kiss of Moisture seems to wear right off, layer Aquaphor underneath it (or something a bit waxier for the 2nd layer, like Burt's Bees.) The non-irritating, fragrance-free ointment soothes dry skin and lips, minor burns and cuts, sensitive skin and skin irritations from laser treatment or radiation therapy. I recall noticing a tube of it around my parents house when my dad was going through radiation for breast cancer. Actually, thinking of that makes me a little bit sad... ANYWAY, I got a 2 pack of .35 oz tubes that are great for your purse. It cost me around 8 or 9 dollars. Totally worth it. If chapstick isn't doing the trick, try this.
